Tax Statement/Payments

Payment Dates to Avoid Penalties

Summer taxes are due on July 1 and payable through September 14 without penalty or interest. Beginning September 15 through September 30, a 1% interest penalty will be added. Add an additional 1% interest for each calendar month thereafter on the unpaid tax balance. Failure to receive a tax bill does not waive penalty or interest.  Winter taxes are due on December 1 and payable through February 14 of the following year without penalty or interest. Beginning February 15, a 3% penalty will be added to summer and winter tax statements.

Payment can be made at Town Hall by check or cash or with check only by mail. Credit/debit cards are accepted through this web site, but a 2.5 % service fee will be added.  E-check payments are also accepted with a $1.95 service fee.  NO part of this fee goes to the Township.  The fee is the amount charged by the service provider and the credit card company.

Note:  The return of a check (electronic or paper) issued to the Charter Township of Independence will result in a returned check fee of $30 being placed on the account that was to benefit from the payment, no mater the reason.

Deferral of Summer Taxes

The law provides for a Principal Residence, whose gross household income for the preceding calendar year did not exceed $40,000 AND you must qualify for Deferment provided for in the General Property Tax Act under at least one of the following classifications:

  • 62 years of age or older
  • Paraplegic or quadriplegic

They are also available in the Treasurer’s office. You may fill out these forms and return them to the Treasurer’s office by September 14th.
